Personal Leadership Credo, Themes, & Philosophy

Writer's picture: Dawn M. MorrisDawn M. Morris

Everyone has a beginning and the values you hold later in your life were usually introduced to you as a child or were the result of experienced events. As for myself I have developed a personal credo, and identified central themes based on the values and beliefs introduced to me as a child which guide me throughout my life.

My Personal Values and Beliefs the Heart of My Credo

Most of my beliefs about what is important in life came from my family. Each member of my family has taught me something valuable. Some things taught to me were family traditions, religious viewpoints, moral beliefs, work ethics, and the importance of being resilient.

These founding beliefs enabled me to establish personal values and beliefs which guide me through life. The strongest translations of my learned beliefs were to be ethical, act with integrity, makes moral decisions, and to be resilient. Resilience is the one I personally have identified within myself, and it’s a trait others who know me have identified as well.

Acting ethically, having integrity and high moral values, and working hard became what I use as my core guiding principles. These guiding principles are what enable me to dedicate myself to a goal and successfully complete it. They also remind me to always try to be a better version of myself than I previously was, and to constantly develop and improve myself.

Personal Credo Statement and Themes

My core beliefs and values are the inspiration behind my personal credo statement, as well as the central themes in my life. My personal credo statement is the following: to inspire and motivate others and myself through perseverance and dedication. What I find most important about this credo is that it focuses on the positive aspects of my core values and allows for me to inspire and motivate others by leading by example through any situation. The central themes in my life which allow for this credo are the following:

· I will never stop learning

· I will master my thoughts

· Always act with integrity

· Live with a purpose

· I will be inspirational and innovative

My personal credo and my personal leadership philosophy are intertwined, and one does not exist without the other. Part of my personal leadership philosophy is that a leader must act with integrity, which means they must be ethical, honest, responsible, and accountable. Another part of my personal leadership philosophy is that the best leaders lead by example. This means that simply by living up to my personal leadership philosophy I will most likely express my personal credo as well, since I may motivate and inspire others to do great work by doing so myself. Furthermore, my conclusions on leadership are backed by research that shows cohesion through establishing organizational values is less effective than developing leaders who encourage ethical behavior and act as role models to employees (Nygaard et al., 2017).

Final Thoughts

While not every leader leads the same way, every leader can benefit from setting an example, and showing others what behaviors are expected. Every leader could benefit from getting to know and understand themselves while developing their own personal credo to keep themselves accountable and focused throughout life. This enhanced understanding will only enable them to be a better person and leader.
