Abstract

Organizational success is determined by measuring criteria important to the organization. One model used to cultivate a successful organization is the pyramid of organizational success. This model guides employees and allows for them to see the importance of their behaviors and role within the organization, as well as how it contributes to its success. The pyramid of organizational success can be used to create a solid foundation with positive employee behaviors. Creating effective and efficient employees with positive behaviors starts during the onboarding phase. The onboarding phase allows for the employee to become familiar with the organization, its goals, their role, and how it contributes to the goals.

Organizational Success Pyramid

There are many ways that organizational success can be measured depending on the criteria being used; however, the most basic measurement of success is if the business is profitable and maintaining a competitive advantage within its market (Crowell, 1998). Dr. Charles R. Crowell discussed in depth how an organization can achieve success, including using the pyramid of organizational success model. The pyramid of organizational success is dependent on building relevant effective behaviors that produce valued results and accomplishments to achieve key organizational outcomes or goals.

The purpose of the pyramid is not to strictly focus on results, but to cultivate relevant behaviors of individual employees, which serve as the pyramids foundation, throughout the organization which will translate to the desired organizational results (Crowell, 1998). For this method to propel an organization to success each employee must work on behavior self-development to adopt and finetune the most efficient behaviors. Furthermore, research has shown that when positive management techniques are used a company will have a higher success level of effectiveness (Crowell, 1998). This is why it is important for every employee, including those in management and leadership positions, to make a personal commitment to excellence and efficiency.

Effective & Efficient Employees are Created

Within the confounds of employee efficiency the individual is dependent to the organizational structure for guidance and performance goals. This means that an employee must learn their role and how it must be conducted to have a positive result on an organizations performance. Dr. Crowell stated that employees who work efficiently and effectively are developed not created (1998). To develop an employee who is effective and efficient the leaders must structure the organization so employees can understand what is expected of them within their role at the company and how it contributes to the organization’s success.

One of the most important parts when structuring an organization is the onboarding program. An effective onboarding program orients employees to their role and the company’s expectations of them. According to one onboarding study, the number of onboarding programs a new employee was involved in had a direct effect on how well socialized they were at the organization (Klein et al., 2015). From this one could then theorize that an increased level of socialization could translate to an employee who is more familiar with what is expected of them within the organization, thus improving their efficiency. It is also important consider that another study on learning efficiency in adults did show a positive correlation between the number of tests administered and the retention rate of the material, which means the likelihood of retaining important information needed to perform efficiently and effectively is higher (Zerr et al., 2018).

Applying the Pyramid of Organizational Success

What follows is a hypothetical example of what it could look like when the pyramid model is applied within an organization. Each organization has its own way to measure success. Within this organization success is equally measured by profits and customer satisfaction. While one can assume that customer satisfaction can translate into higher profits this is not always guaranteed, especially if the demand is high and there is little to no competition in the market.

To achieve both positive profits and customer satisfaction the organization needs to cultivate efficient employees who generate effective work results that contribute to the organizational goals. Cultivating the employees starts during the onboarding phase when they are first hired, or moved to a different position. During this phase the employee will first become immersed in the organizations values, missions, goals, and objectives. Next, they will become familiar with their department, how it contributes to other departments, and how it helps the organization be successful. After they know the importance of their department, the employees will then get introduced to their specific job role, expectations, and its importance. While the short phase is the introduction to the job, the longer onboarding phase will be composed of a longer orientation and mentoring period where the employee is required to demonstrate the skills needed for the job.

During the longer onboarding phase the employees will have the opportunity to consistently see the results of their work through customer surveys, and other work performance measures. Given that leadership and the employee will be able to see the results, the leadership team will be able to help the employee on any weak skills that need improved to help improve efficiency, thus building a solid behavioral foundation. Overall, the work that the employee does will contribute to the overall success and goals of the organization, and with this onboarding process they will have ample time to finetune the skills and behaviors needed to contribute in a positive way.

Final Thoughts

Successful organizations are those that can accomplish the goals they establish. For many organizations this means being both competitive and profitable within its market. By creating a well formulated organizational program that orientates and develops employees, then the organization will improve its chances of being successful. Furthermore, organizations that use the pyramid of organizational success model have a greater understanding of the importance of employee development and its role in efficiency.
