The basic general purpose of communication is to relay a message from one object, or person, to another. It’s a simple process that can become very complicated once multiple dimensions or layers are added, since the message will need to stay consistent from the origin through the various layers. Often if the wrong from of communication is used then the mess
age can become twisted by the time it makes it through all the layers.
Within this week’s article, there are many theories on organizational communication discussed, and many of them seem to explain the same general idea in different ways. A couple theories that did somewhat align with my understanding of organizational leadership, include the Naturalist Theory, and the Theory of Team Based Management. In Naturalist Theory, the organization was seen as an organism and was represented through images and perceived as a permeable entity in relation to its surroundings (Carvalho De Benedicto, Sugahara, Filho, & Sousa, 2018). While in the Theory of Team Based Management the organization is seen as a living and open system that is reliant on leaders who create strong and cohesive work groups (Carvalho De Benedicto, Sugahara, Filho, & Sousa, 2018). Essentially, both theories seem to be explaining the same theoretical idea differing ways, that an organization is an individual entity made up of various hierarchy groups that need to perfect communication between each other in order to effectively achieve the organizational goals.

The traditional model of organizational communication explains organizational communication in a way similar to how I’ve described it in previous courses. This is that the organization should be viewed as a machine with many parts, communication is just one mechanism to the machine that is needed to keep it functioning efficiently. If the form of communication is no longer effective, than the machine must be retooled, and a new communication mechanism must be introduced. If viewed from another perspective the organization could be compared to the physical body, and the leadership system to the brain and central nervous system. The parts of the body will work correctly if the right communication signals are being transmitted to them. If there is something wrong with the form of communication or if the line of communication becomes disrupted, then it must be assessed and repaired. Sometimes this could be retraining the brain to analyze and respond differently to situations or it could mean finding where the proper message is being interrupted or misinterpreted to repair the area.
